The family of a Palestinian prisoner, who died while in Israeli custody on Tuesday claim that he was assaulted by Israeli guards several weeks prior to his death, Palestinian news agency Ma'an reported.

The Israel Prison Service denied the accusation, claiming that the prisoner was released on the 16th of February. The week before his release, he suffered a heart attack and was hospitalized at Soroka University Medical Center in Beersheba, the IPS said.

Ma'an reported that Jihad Abd al-Rahman al-Taweel, 47, of Jerusalem was taken to the hospital after he passed out following a raid on his ward by the guards during which they "assaulted prisoners with pepper spray."

A relative of the man told Ma'an that al-Taweel was serving a three-month sentence in Dekel Prison in Beersheba after he was caught driving without a license.
