An Indian couple from Chhattisgarh in Central India have named their newborn baby twins "Covid" and "Corona," reports the Hindustan Times
The twins were born during the night between March 26 and 27, amid India's coronavirus nationwide lockdown.
"We have named them Covid (boy) and Corona (girl) for now,” said Preeti Verma, their 27-year-old mother.
Although hearing "Covid" or "Corona" spoken may be associated with worldwide chaos, the couple said that they named the children as such to symbolize the hardships that were overcome during the lockdown before the successful birth of their children.
"Indeed the virus is dangerous and life-threatening, but its outbreak made people focus on sanitation and hygiene, and inculcate other good habits. Thus, we thought about these names," Verma said.
"The delivery happened after facing several difficulties and therefore, my husband and I wanted to make the day memorable," she continued.
When the couple arrived at the hospital, a C-section was arranged, since the birth was complicated, according Shubhra Singh, the hospital's public relations officer. Despite the complications however, the 45-minute surgery was successful.
Verma said that, "when the hospital staff also started calling the babies Corona and Covid, we finally decided to name them after the pandemic."
The couple did state that they may change their decision later, and rename their children.
Verma said that despite the lockdown having restricted any vehicular movement, once she started experiencing extreme labor pains, her husband was able to arrange an ambulance for her.
"As no vehicular movement was allowed on roads due to the lockdown, we were stopped by police at various places, but they let us go after noticing my condition,” she said.
Close family of the parents who wanted to attend the birth weren't able to make it, Verma said, since bus and trains have been stopped also due to the lockdown.
The twins have become a center of attraction in the hospital, according to Singh, since the couple named them as Corona and Covid.
