IOC president says 2016 host needs public support

Cities that aspire to host the 2016 games must above all have the support of their people, International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge said Saturday. Four contenders vying to host the 2016 Games were making their first formal presentation to IOC members during the Pan American Sports Organization meeting in the Mexican resort town of Acapulco. Rogges called the presentations by Chicago, Madrid, Tokyo and Rio de Janeiro a good warm-up. He emphasized that prospective hosts of the games "should ask the people if they want them." He added that there were "a lot of technical aspects" but "the most important thing is the will of the people of the country."
