An Israeli team won a baseball tournament abroad for the first time ever earlier this month. Coach Ephraim Keren's Israel national juvenile little league team, made up of 11 and 12 year olds from across the country, was undefeated in the Tuscany series championship held in Sienna, Italy, from August 3-10. The 15 member team was managed by Yaron Erel and run under the auspices of the Israel Association of Baseball. It clinched the title in thrilling style, beating the local Italian side 1-0 in the final game. Coaches from around the country nominated 40 players as all stars and the national team was then chosen from this pool. In the very intense championship game the Italians had a runner on third base with two outs, but the batter grounded out to the first baseman to end the game. Team members Yakir Becker, Yotam Ben-Amram, Dov Ber-Eisen, Noam Calisar, Yoav Halper, Shuki Harow, Alex Hofsradter, Nadav Keren, Eytan Litt, Ben Laks, Shlomo Lipman, Yoav MeOded, Naftali Rochwarger, and Zevi Scheinfeld, stood with pride as they were presented with the trophy after winning all five of their tournament games. The IAB sends little league teams to Europe for tournament play every summer. Past tournaments have taken place in Poland, Prague, Bratislava, and Slovakia.
