Ironi Kiryat Shmona strengthened its position in the Premier League’s top-four on Sunday night, beating Hapoel Ashkelon 1-0 on the road.
Defender Salah Hasarma scored the only goal of the match in the 27th minute, giving the visitors all three points with a mediocre performance after last week’s humbling home defeat to Hapoel Haifa.
Kiryat Shmona’s fourth win in its last six matches takes it sixpoints clear of fifth-placed Hapoel Acre, but leaves it still six-points back of third-placed Maccabi Tel Aviv.
Ashkelon, on the other hand, looks set to battle against relegation until the end of the season after failing to score for a fifth straight match on Sunday, losing for the fourth time in that stretch.
Ashkelon’s home form has been of particular concern for coach Guy Azuri, with the team finding the back of the net just once in its last nine home encounters, leaving it just two points clear of Bnei Sakhnin and the relegation zone.
Kiryat Shmona was playing for the first time since star midfielder Elroei Cohen moved to Hapoel Tel Aviv in the last day of the transfer window last week.
Cohen is expected to be on the bench for Hapoel’s match against Maccabi Petah Tikva at Bloomfield Stadium on Monday night.
