Haim Revivo made a winning start to his coaching career on Monday with a surprising 1-0 home victory over top of the table Betar Jerusalem.
A stunning 70th minute volley by Rahamin Tzakul is all that separated the two sides. Tzakul latched on to a corner that was headed away by Betar defender Tomer Ben-Yosef and fired in an unstoppable first time effort past a helpless Tvrtko Kale.
The result moves Ashdod out of the relegation zone and leaves Betar still with a little work to do to clinch a second consecutive league title.
It had a been a less than pulsating encounter in the first hour and 10 minutes. After going a goal down Betar began to attack but to no avail.
The closest Yitzhak Schum's team came to scoring was two minutes into injury time when a thunderous Aviram Bruchian long range effort rattled the bottom of Ashdod's left post.
