Maccabi Haifa advanced to the quarterfinals of the State Cup on Thursday, defeating Hapoel Galil Elyon/Gilboa 75-73 at Romema. Haifa is the third team to book its place in the last eight, joining Hapoel Jerusalem and Hapoel Holon, both of which received automatic quarterfinal berths. The remainder of the last-16 ties will be played on December 21. Galil, which defeated Haifa in the BSL on Saturday, led 37-35 at the break and started the second half with a 12-0 run to open a 14-point margin (49-35). However Haifa limited the damage slightly in the remainder of the period, closing to within nine points with 10 minutes to play (60-51). Galil's gap continued to shrink as the game progressed and Haifa soon took the lead. Hapoel struggled to find the basket and Devon Jefferson dominated the fourth period, leading Maccabi to the slender win. Jefferson scored 19 points for the hosts, with Moshe Mizrahi adding 14 and BJ McKie chipping in with 13. Brian Roberts and Elishay Kadir scored 17 and 16 points, respectively, for Galil.
