Russia sealed victory over Israel in the Fed Cup Sunday after Shahar Pe'er and Tzipi Obziler lost their matches to Maria Sharapova and Anna Chakvetadze respectively. Pe'er was crushed by the Australian Open champion in the third match of tie at Ramat Hasharon. Sharapova completely controlled the match from start to finish, sweeping aside the Israeli number one, 6-1 6-1. After the first set, Pe'er (17) showed no signs of repeating Saturday's stunning comeback when she defeated world number 16 Dinara Safina 0-6, 6-2, 6-2 in the first match of the tie. Sharapova's win put Russia 2-1 up in the tie after the powerful blond bombshell beat Tzipi Obziler 6-0, 6-4 on Saturday. It was left to Obziler to save Israel from defeat, but the world number 85 lost her match against Chakvetadze 6-4, 6-2.
