Israeli doubles player Andy Ram, taking part in the controversial Dubai Championships a week after fellow Israeli Shahar Pe'er was barred from entering the country, lost his opening match on Wednesday.
Ram and his partner, Kevin Ullyett of Zimbabwe, lost to Russia's Marat Safin and Spain's David Ferrer 6-3, 2-6, 10-8.
The match was played under tight security, with spectators having to leave their belongings outside and walk through metal detectors upon entering the court.
