Chaya Beilin is on a mission to spay the street cats of Jerusalem.Beilin runs an animal shelter outside Jerusalem for SPCA Israel and volunteers in her spare time trapping stray cats for Spay Israel. Chaya immigrated to Israel 30 years ago from New York; she lives in Givat Ze’ev with her husband, four kids, seven dogs and 20 cats.
Beilin invited the ‘Post’ to film her while she caught stray cats by the edge of the Pisgat Ze’ev settlement. The security guard at the settlement entrance called Chaya for help, after investing his own money to feed the cats.
Spay Israel is an organization that has successfully neutered and spayed 2000 street cats every year in Jerusalem, Rehovot and Beersheba. Despite Beilin's and Spay Israel’s efforts, hundreds of thousands of cats are still living on the streets of Jerusalem. Chaya is aware of the daunting figures, but she believes her work is making a difference.
