Conversations about North American aliyah have long centered on a few familiar places, chiefly the New York area and other major East Coast Jewish communities. A week of events across the United States this month suggests that the circle is widening.
Nefesh B’Nefesh recorded 1,021 registrations for weeklong programming that ran from New York to Texas. Events in Houston and Dallas alone drew nearly 250 registrations, close to a quarter of the total.“Interest in aliyah continues to come from an increasingly wide range of communities across North America,” said Naftali Derovan, head of the Aliyah Guidance Division at Nefesh B’Nefesh.
The week opened in Great Neck, New York, with an “Aliyah in One” event held alongside a Community & Education Fair. Organized by Ofek Israeli with Nefesh B’Nefesh and other Jewish and Israeli organizations, it drew close to 300 participants. Programming then moved to Philadelphia, Silver Spring, Houston, Dallas and Boston, with a dedicated visit to Brandeis University in partnership with the Israel Student Authority.
Practical questions, practical answers
For most participants, the question was less whether to move to Israel than how: which community might suit their family, how to find work, how Israeli schools operate and how to learn Hebrew.
Attendees met one-on-one with Nefesh B’Nefesh advisers and specialists in employment, Hebrew learning, professional integration, government advocacy and community resources. Representatives from The Jewish Agency for Israel, the Ministry of Aliyah and Integration, the Ministry of Education, the Israel Student Authority, the Naale high school program and Israeli municipalities were also on hand.
Medical professionals received specialized assistance through the International Medical Aliyah Program (IMAP), which took part in the events in New York, Houston and Dallas.
Hearing from those who made the move
At a dedicated community pavilion, prospective immigrants met olim already living in Israel and heard firsthand about daily life across the country.
“These events give prospective olim the opportunity not only to receive practical assistance, but also to speak directly with people who have already built their lives in communities across Israel,” Derovan said. “Those personal conversations can provide invaluable clarity and perspective as individuals and families begin to envision their own future in Israel.”
The communities represented mirrored the week’s theme. Alongside municipal representatives from Jerusalem, Haifa and Beit Shemesh, residents and olim came from Ashkelon, Karmiel, Pardes Hanna-Karkur, Carmei Gat, Harish, Tel Aviv and Carmei HaNadiv, a spread stretching from the Galilee to the southern coastal plain and well beyond Israel’s best-known destinations.
Much of the programming was held in partnership with the Ministry of Aliyah and Integration, The Jewish Agency for Israel, Keren Kayemeth LeIsrael and Jewish National Fund-USA.
Nefesh B’Nefesh will continue its North American programming through November and December. Details on upcoming events are available at nbn.org.il/all-events.
