After US President Donald Trump called for her arrest last week on grounds of sedition, Michigan police on Friday responded to a bomb threat at Jewish senator Elissa Slotkin’s home, her office announced.
The Democratic Senator from Michigan was away from home at the time, her office noted, adding that police searched the property and confirmed that no one was in danger.
Earlier this week, Slotkin, along with several other Democratic members of Congress, posted a video accusing the Trump administration of pitting the US military against American citizens.
“Our laws are clear: You can refuse illegal orders. No one has to carry out orders that violate the law or our constitution,” the lawmakers stated in the video.
Trump accuses US lawmakers of 'seditious behavior'
On Thursday, Trump called for Slotkin and the other lawmakers in the video to be arrested for seditious acts.
"SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" the Republican president wrote in a Truth Social post.
"This is really bad, and Dangerous to our Country," Trump wrote in an earlier post. "Their words cannot be allowed to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
Trump later reposted other threats from various users on Truth Social, including one that read “Hang them, George Washington would.”
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt later said that Trump was not calling to execute the members of Congress, but accused the lawmakers of encouraging armed service members to "defy the president’s lawful orders."
In a X/Twitter post Thursday, Slotkin defended the original video.
"This is the law. Passed down from our Founding Fathers, to ensure our military upholds its oath to the Constitution — not a king,” she wrote.
In an interview on MS NOW, she added that “Leadership climate is set from the top, and if the president is saying you should be hanged, then we shouldn’t be surprised when folks on the ground are going to follow suit and say even worse.”
Slotkin is one of 34 Jewish members of the current Congress. She is a moderate, pro-Israel Democrat who was a former CIA officer and served three tours in Iraq alongside the military.
