In an interview with Channel 13 news, Mirjam Reijnen described how the family had spent all day and night in their bomb shelter for fear of rockets and mortars.
“The red alarm went off and we heard a loud explosion – louder than we are used to having,” Reijnen described. “The house started shaking, the electricity went off and the fire alarm went on. I said to my husband, ‘They hit the house.’”Reijnen said that they called Nahal Oz security who came to confirm the direct hit. They rescued the family. The mother said she did not even inspect the ruin of her house, as they just wanted to leave. “Everything was covered in dust,” she said.Nahal Oz is located in the northwestern part of the Negev Desert near the cities of Sderot and Netivot.In the interview, Reijnen said she and her family immigrated to Israel “because life is better in Israel for our children. We are Jewish and we want to live in a Jewish community.”She said that the family will not leave the kibbutz, even though it is close to Gaza and even though they know rocket barrages will happen again.“Maybe it will stop for now. But in a month or whatever it will start again,” she said. “That is just the way it is.”In a separate interview with the same station, she also said that it is important that people live in southern Israel specifically, and that all the craziness builds a closeness between members of the community.In Holland, Reijnen and her husband, Raymond, were firefighters.
