The war was a pivotal event in the history of the Middle East and of the Jewish people. Israel’s seemingly miraculous victory in defense of its homeland was a transformative experience for Israelis and Jews around the world, filling them with pride and confidence. But the war left much unresolved. Many of the issues featured in the news today trace their beginnings to the Six Day War—the “two state solution”; Jewish communities or settlements in the West Bank; and the future of Jerusalem. The historical context of the Six Day War is often missing from today’s discussions. This information is critically important for understanding why the war took place and why events unfolded the way they did.
