PLO official Saeb Erekat denied Saturday night that Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has resigned from the organization’s executive.
Erekat’s denial came in response to reports that Abbas and nine other members of the executive committee have resigned to pave the way for the election of new officials.
Erekat said that such resignations are submitted to the PLO’s parliament-in-exile, the Palestinian National Council, and not the executive.
The committee decided on Saturday night to start preparations for convening the Palestinian National Council as part of Abbas’s efforts to bring new faces to the leadership.
At the meeting on Saturday night, the committee voted to appoint Erekat as PLO secretary- general.
