To celebrate its centenary, Tel Aviv is launching its first International Theater Festival with some 16 amazing productions from 14 nations around the world.
It starts on February 21 with the Brecht/Weill Threepenny Opera from the famed Berliner Ensemble, directed by iconic auteur director Robert Wilson.
Other challenging shows include a Macbeth (June) from Poland that's performed in the open; a blend of Western theater and traditional Peking opera from Shanghai called Scholar and Executioner (June); the ever-vibrant Bernstein/Sondheim West Side Story from the US (September); and a gypsy version of Sophocles's Electra from Romania.
Most of the performances will be at the Cameri Theater of Tel Aviv, which has initiated the festival together with the Tel Aviv Municipality, other local bodies as well as the participating nations' governments and embassies.
