A new album by jazzman Yuval Cohen, brother of Avishai Cohen of 'Third World Love' fame.

By all accounts, Yuval Cohen's debut album has been a long time coming. The older brother of better-known siblings, New York residents trumpeter Avishai Cohen and saxophonist Anat Cohen, Tel Aviv-based Yuval has steadily built a reputation as one of the leading lights on the local jazz scene.

Cohen's brand new Freedom album showcases his talents, not only as a saxophonist with mellifluous leanings, but also as an accomplished composer. All but one of the 10 tracks are self-written, and there is a singular "homey" feel to the whole package. Cohen has obviously paid his musical dues and displays impressive technique, augmented by an overriding sense that he lives, breathes and plays his Israeliness.
All this will no doubt be conveyed at his show at the Zappa Club in Tel Aviv this Sunday (9 p.m.). For the occasion, Cohen will be supported by several "imports" from New York - Israeli bass player Omer Avital, one of the leading figures on the New York jazz scene today, Israeli guitarist Gilad Hekselman, who has also just released his debut album, and American drummer Daniel Freedman. Freedman and Avital are also both members of the popular Third World Love band, also currently on tour here, as is Cohen's trumpet-playing brother Avishai.
The supporting cast on Sunday will include Cohen's sister Anat on sax and clarinet, and vocalists Mihal Cohen (no relation) and Itai Pearl.
