US-born Israeli director Joseph Cedar won the "Golden Bear" award for the year's best director award Saturday night at the Berlin International Film Festival for his movie "Beaufort," a portrait of fear and futility set in a military outpost in southern Lebanon in the run-up to the IDF's withdrawal in 2000.
"It's a movie about how wars end ... about a way to cut the cycle," said Cedar, 38. "Beaufort," his third film, was one of 22 competing for the Berlin festival's top award.
The movie, based on a novel by Ron Leshem, focuses on a small group of Israeli soldiers defending their heavily fortified yet vulnerable base next to the famed 12th-century, Crusader-built Beaufort Castle.
