Ukrainian theater dance company Fantastic Show brings its energy and precision to Israel.

The Fantastic Show theater dance company from the Ukraine kicks off a two-week Israel tour of its show Crazy Dance this week. Starting Wednesday in Netanya, the show - a selected medley from the company's repertoire - will make its way to Jerusalem on Thursday, continuing on to Nazareth, Haifa, Tel Aviv and Ashkelon, as well as points in between, before winding up in Beersheba and Ohr Akiva on February 11 and 13.
While the 45-member ensemble regularly tours Russia and Europe, and made a recent splash in Las Vegas, its home base is Sevastopol in the Ukraine, where artistic director Vadim Elizarov created the dance theater in 2000 as a spin-off of his famous sports-influenced dance club Victoria. Together with his wife and dancing partner Nina Marsheva, Elizarov founded the club in the late Seventies, and for 25 years Victoria dominated ballroom dancing in the Soviet Union, opening the genre to elements of classical, modern and folk dance, jazz, tap dance and even rap.
"Energy and precision come from sports and from ballroom dancing, while an artistic approach to dance brings in choreography and a dramatic story," explains Elizarov by phone from his home in Russia.
This is The Fantastic Show's second time in Israel, following last year's tour. Elizarov, who is Jewish on his father's side, recalls meeting family members he had not seen in 15 years. His impressions from that visit seem all positive:
"The audience is very good - open, friendly and educated. And the country is so young, so new!"
