Philip de la Croix, director of the Mezzo channel, visited Israel for the third time last week. Speaking to journalists, he spoke about the channel's achievements and future plans, and expressed a hope to create new partnerships in Israel. Having grown from 15 million subscribers to 16.5 million in 39 countries over the past two years, Mezzo plans to launch a new logo and a second channel in January which will broadcast in HD with 5.1 surround sound. In addition to the current prime-time offerings of classical, opera and dance programs, Thursday evenings will be dedicated to jazz, beginning in September. Another addition is a program of religious music, presented on Sunday mornings, which promises to be one of the channel's most successful programs. HOT offers Mezzo as part of its basic package, and it has 1 million subscribers. Future plans include more live broadcasts, including the Israeli Opera's performance of Verdi's Nabucco at Masada in June 2010, as well as one of the Israeli Philharmonic or Jerusalem Chamber Music Festival concerts.
