As shops stock up with costumes for Purim, thoughts begin to focus not just on what to wear, but where. If you're eager to escape the city over the festive weekend, then the 'Upside Down Festival' could be for you. Set in Kadita, a small village in the Galilee, the event offers three days, Thursday to Saturday (March 20 to 22) to get away from it all and dwell in the rolling hills close to the Israel National Trail along which the Walk About Love collective will be hosting a series of spring events. Festival-goers will be arriving from 7 p.m. on Thursday, providing ample time to pitch their tents before the music gets underway at midnight, which marks the vernal equinox, a full moon signalling the half-way point between the winter and summer solstices. Reggae DJs will warm up the crowd until sunrise when the perennial festival favourite, trance, takes over in the shape of DJs Desert Trips and Digital Cup of Coffee among others. A break from the music comes in the shape of a special Kabbalat Shabbat (welcoming the Sabbath) ceremony on Friday evening, after which live musicians will take to the stage, including Gypsy Soul, Koritsa and Tribeat, who fuse electro-inspired dance music with live drums, sitar and didgeridoo. Saturday signals time to wind down and relax with a special Shabbat 'walk about' hike along the Amud River, now flowing freely after the winter rains.
