Musician Shlomo Gronich and media figure Jackie Levy are the co-winners of this year's Liebhaber Prize for Religious Tolerance and Cultural Openness in Israel, which is awarded by the Schechter Institute of Jewish Studies. The award, which includes a NIS 100,000 cash prize, will be given out during the institute's December 13 graduation ceremony.
The award, named for Rabbi Marc and Henia Liebhaber, was established in 1996 in the wake of the Rabin assassination. Each year the prize is given to one or more individuals - but not organizations - who have made a significant contribution towards achieving religious tolerance and cultural openness in Israel.
The Schechter Institute said that this year, the judges, led by the institute's president, Professor Rabbi David Golinkin, "decided to turn towards the field of art and communications," as opposed to recent years when the award was given out mostly to educators.
"There are various ways to promote religious tolerance in Israel. Jackie Levy through his humor, and Shlomo Gronich through his music, have succeeded in bringing together people of different, even conflicting, groups in Israeli society," said Golinkin.
