Fans of the freer side of the jazz scene are in for a treat at the end of March when John Zorn and his entourage fly in. Between March 29 and April 2 the 54-year-old Jewish New York musician will headline a festival devoted entirely to a selection of works from his gargantuan oeuvre.
Zorn has been at the cutting edge of musical exploration for over three decades, culling an eclectic span of music from numerous cultures for his Tzadik record label.
Zorn has introduced American audiences to what he calls "radical Jewish music," including an album by Israeli saxophonist Daniel Zamir and a wide range of material incorporating anything from the worlds of jazz, rock, punk, ambient, classical and electronic music.
On his upcoming visit here, Zorn will be accompanied by a stellar roster of cross-genre musicians, including headlining jazz trumpeter Dave Douglass, cross-boundary guitarist Marc Ribot and percussionist Cyro Baptista.
Concerts will be held at Beit Aviv Hai in Jerusalem and various Tel Aviv venues including the Tel Aviv Cinematheque, Mann Auditorium and Levontin 7.
