World-renowned US tenor Neil Shicoff will sing a benefit gala of arias and duets at the Tel Aviv Museum on February 11. Proceeds from the concert will go to the burn unit at Sheba Hospital. Israel Opera singers Ira Bertman (soprano) and Alexandra Shabat (mezzo-soprano) will be on stage with Shicoff. The piano accompanist will be Tamir Hasson and the program will be hosted by Michael Ajzenstadt.
Shicoff, 58, was born in Brooklyn. He made his professional debut in 1975 under the baton of James Levine singing the title role in Verdi's Ernani at the Cincinnati Opera. Since then, he has sung all the great tenor roles in all the world's leading opera houses.
In 1984 he had an onstage nervous breakdown during a performance at the Met. He moved to Europe where slowly he rebuilt both his professional and personal life, and once again sang everywhere to great acclaim.
He comes to us from the Zurich Opera where he sang Elazar in Fromental Halevy's La Juive, a role he recently added to his repertoire.
