The end is nigh

The end is nigh

'The summer is ending," Chicken Little might have cried had he been a bit less dramatic and depressed about the coming winter. Had Chicken Little been stricken with the Jerusalem Syndrome, he might have been running through the streets of Tel Aviv, warning of the coming of the end of the world. Or more likely, the streets of Jerusalem. But the end of summer is coming. Some might say it has already come and went. But in Tel Aviv, where it's still possible to wear shorts and a tank top (during the day anyway), one restaurant is celebrating the changing of seasons like summer was going out of style, which it is, for about the next six months. Frida Kahlo (43 Rehov Lilienblum) is holding a South American-style street party complete with food (of course!), drinks (how could they not?) and music (both live and DJ'ed). From 5 p.m. on Saturday, revelers can enjoy the end of Kahlo's summer menu - in advance of their winter menu's implementation. Highlights include NIS 10 tapas to include mini hamburgers with chili and burritos filled with sausage, roasted vegetables and a smoke sauce. Cocktails are NIS 30 each and include such classics as caperinja, arak mojito and Cava-based drinks. And, as it seems to be the bar staff's drink of preference, Campari. Libi Michael, currently the restaurant manager who began her career at Kahlo as the bar manager, has brought much pride to the drink-smiths on Lilienblum. Aside from her stellar cucumber martini, she took second place at the local Campari cocktail competition. Thus, it would be well-advised to let your excitement get the better of you. This is the fourth time they're holding a South American themed party, she said by phone, taking a break to speak with Billboard on a rare day off she spent moving house. But, this one, she noted, will be bigger and more festive than ones in the past. The street will be lined with tables and chairs and there will be a decided Brazilian emphasis, to be made all the more apparent with the musical additions of Fernando Seixas (check him out online for a notion of the craziness in store), who will perform live with his band, from 7 p.m. to be followed by a DJ set of Latin music. In addition to the street party, from October 11 through November 15, Frida Kahlo will be featuring dishes from the winter menu on special from 7 p.m. each night. A fixed price of NIS 89 buys you two first course dishes - the only type of dishes they've got - and a dessert of their excellent Catalonian Cream.
