7 injured in Beit Hanina fire

A Monday morning fire on the ground floor of a four-story Beit Hanina apartment building in the eastern section of the capital resulted in seven injuries, police said. According to a police spokesman, the fire started at approximately 7 a.m., at which time the blaze prevented the residents of the apartment from escaping through their front door. “There was too much smoke for them to get out on the ground floor, so a fire department dispatcher instructed them to go to the roof until emergency services arrived,” the spokesman said.

Upon arriving at the scene, police cordoned-off the area as fire fighters extinguished the blaze. Five of the residents were subsequently treated for light-to-moderate injuries, while two were treated for smoke inhalation at Hadassah University Medical Center, police said. “The apartment was badly damaged and an investigation has been opened by police and fire officials to determine if it was the result of a criminal act,” the spokesman said.
