73-year-old gets a year in prison for tax evasion

A 73-year-old Haifa man will spend a year in prison for tax evasion, the Haifa District Court of Criminal Appeals ruled on Tuesday, after state prosecutors appealed against a 'far too light' community service sentence.
Yosef Gahali was sentenced last June in the Haifa Magistrate's Court to six months community service, 12 months' probation and a NIS 25,000 fine for evading taxes.
State prosecutors immediately appealed to the district court, arguing that the sentence was too lenient and did not reflect the seriousness of the offenses.
According to the indictment, Gahali, a contractor, deliberately failed to report NIS 1.2 million in income and presented false documentation regarding his earnings.
In the appeal, attorney Eran Bar of the Haifa District Attorney's Office argued that the community service sentence ran counter to the state's policy of punishing tax evaders, and to Supreme Court rulings which found such offenses were serious and courts should impose prison terms on offenders.
