Abbas wants committee to supervise implementation of peace commitments

In his meeting with US President Barack Obama on Thursday, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas is expected to suggest the establishment of a supervisory committee, which will work with the Middle East Quartet to ensure that both Israel and the Palestinians are complying with their peace commitments. According to Israel Radio, during a meeting in Washington on Wednesday night, Abbas said that he intends to present Obama with new ideas that will advance the Middle East peace process by connecting the Road Map and Arab League peace initiatives. Abbas said that he is not asking that 5 million Palestinian refugees return to Israel and that he had reached understanding on this issue with former prime minister Ehud Olmert. "We will not destroy Israel," he reportedly added.
