Agreement reached to expand chief rabbi election committee

Bayit Yehudi and Deputy Minister for Religious Services Eli Ben-Dahan announced on Wednesday that they had reached an agreement with Hatnua MK Elazar Stern on his bill to increase the size of the electoral committee for electing chief rabbis and was working with him on the issue.
The committee which currently numbers 150 members all of whom are men, will be expanded to 200 members with 20 percent of spots reserved for women. The bill will be brought for a preliminary hearing in two weeks.
Expansion of the committee could ease the way for the election of a national-religious rabbi, since many of the current committee members were appointed to their position by the haredi Shas party and remain loyal to its directives. Expanding the committee will reduce Shas’ influence.
