Alaska still tallying votes as Republicans lead in key races

Alaska election officials on Tuesday were tallying more than 50,000 ballots in gubernatorial and US Senate races that could add to decisive Republican gains in last week's midterm elections if narrow leads hold.
A week after elections that gave Republicans control of the US Senate and strengthened their grip on the US House of Representatives, Alaska Democratic Senator Mark Begich was trailing Republican Dan Sullivan, unofficial results showed.
In another tight Alaska race, Republican Governor Sean Parnell held a lead over challenger Bill Walker, an independent with a Democratic running mate, uncertified results showed.
Republicans said the remaining votes were unlikely to sway the outcome because their candidates were sure to build on their leads. Democrats said they would get bigger boosts because thousands of votes came from regions more favorable to their side.
