Alleged Palestinian informer sentenced to death

Alleged Palestinian info

A West Bank military tribunal has sentenced a member of the Palestinian security services to death for sharing information with Israel. The head of the Palestinian court, Ahmed Abu Dayyeh, says the information the man provided to Israel led to the arrest of several Palestinians. Abu Dayyeh said Wednesday that the 41-year-old officer was recruited as an informer in 1992 and is to be executed by firing squad. The sentence still awaits approval by President Mahmoud Abbas, who routinely declines to do so. The court has refused to release the officer's name. The case came at a time of increasing coordination between Israel and Abbas' security forces. Abbas' rival, the Islamic militant Hamas, has accused Abbas of collaborating with Israel.
