Anti-apartheid group slammed after attending Toronto event

A Toronto city councillor is up in arms against the Pride Toronto gay rights organization for allowing the Queers Against Israeli Apartheid movement to make political statements during Saturday’s “Dyke March,” Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reported Tuesday.

QuAIA had said it would not attend the Sunday parade in order not to endanger the festival’s city funding. It did however show up for the Saturday march, unfurling a banner bearing the words “Support Palestinian Queers, Boycott Israeli Tourism.” City councillor Giorgio Mammoliti said that a debate now needs be conducted as to “whether money should go to [Toronto] Pride this year and also whether or not Pride owes us any money this year for cleaning up the streets.”

“You have the Jewish community that’s very upset at what’s going on. And so some of us thought we resolved this thing at City Hall by saying just have them not show up. But they did show up, and now we’ve got a decision to make,” Mammoliti said.
