Assad dismisses Syrian opposition as 'failure' in rare speech

Syrian President Bashar Assad expressed a decisive stance on rebel forces fighting to topple his regime in a rare speech on Syrian state television on Sunday, AFP reported.
Assad dismissed the Syrian opposition as a "failure" and insisted that no "sane human being would think that terrorism can be dealt with via politics."
"No solution can be reached with terror except by striking it with an iron fist," he added.
The Syrian president stressed, however, that this does not mean that he has given up on planned peace talks dubbed Geneva 2.
"There is no reason why we shouldn't strike terror while at the same time working politically," he said.
