Barak: Nobel Prize achievement is 'celebration' for Israel

Defense Minister Ehud Barak congratulated Daniel Schechtman Wednesday for winning the Nobel Prize.  "This is a day of celebration, pride and great honor for Professor Shechtman, his originality and his perseverance," Barak said in a statement.
He also said that groundbreaking research was "further evidence of the rare human resource that exists in Israel and the keystone of our national strength."
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for 2011 to Shechtman of the Technion, the Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa earlier Wednesday for his discovery of quasicrystals, which have non-repeating patterns.
Shechtman is the tenth Israeli or Israeli-born scientist to win a Nobel Prize, and the third to win for chemistry.
