Border Police commander indicted for assaulting Arab minor

A commander of a border police unit and the unit’s driver were indicted in the Jerusalem District Court on Sunday for assaulting a 17-year-old minor at the Rockefeller checkpoint in Jerusalem on March 16, 2010.

Eli Ben Ozri, 30, the commander, and Zion Beinishti, 23, the driver, both of the "Ma'ayan" division, were indicted by the Police Investigations Division. According to the indictment, the minor was stopped at the checkpoint at 1:30 in the afternoon, and a search of his belongings uncovered three explosives. Ben Ozri allegedly took him behind a car and punched him in the jaw and kicked him in the knee.

Beinishti drove Ben Ozri and the minor to the police station, where the two reportedly continued to harass the minor. In one instance, the men put a coat over the minor’s head and tightened the handcuffs in order to deliberately hurt him. Later, the men held a gun, which had an empty cartridge, to the minor's head, and forced him to count down from ten to one, and yelled “death to Arabs!” when they pulled the trigger.

The men also put one of the minor’s explosives in the minor’s pocket and pretended to light a lighter, in order to intimidate the minor, and continued to hit and beat him while the coat was over his head. The men are charged with three counts of assault and abuse of a minor, one count of threatening a minor, and one count of recklessness and negligence.
