Brazil announces willingness to mediate Israel-Syria talks

Brazil announces willing

Brazilian Foreign Minister Celso Amorim announced in an Army Radio interview on Thursday that his country would be willing to mediate peace talks between Israel and Syria. "Both parties are welcome if they have a sincere desire for peace," Amorim was quoted as saying. Brazil, where Jews and Arabs live side by side, would be a good setting for talks, he added. Israeli officials recently hinted that they would not entrust the Turkish officials who had mediated the previous round of talks with renewing the sensitive negotiations, as Ankara was becoming increasingly critical of Israel. Brazil's initiative came as President Shimon Peres was visiting the country.
