British envoy to UN: Settlements 'illegal under int'l law'

British Ambassador to the UN Mark Lyall Grant spoke on behalf of Britain, France and Germany on Friday and condemned Israeli settlements as "illegal under international law," Reuters reported.
The three countries hope an independent Palestinian state will join the UN as a new member state by September 2011, Grant added.
The US vetoed a UN resolution Friday that would have condemned "illegal" settlements beyond the Green Line and demanded an immediate halt to all settlement building.
The 14 other Security Council members voted in favor of the resolution in Friday's vote, reflecting the wide support for the Palestinian-backed draft which had about 130 co-sponsors.
