Cairo: Muslim brotherhood protests; liberals stay home

Dozens of protesters rallied in Tahrir Square in Egypt on Friday to demonstrate with the Muslim Brotherhood and Salafi groups under the banner of "Protecting the Revolution," the online English-language website the Egypt Independent reported.

The protest demands that the military transfer power to a civilian-run government, the amendment of Article 28 of the Constitutional Declaration which bars any appeal of the Presidential Elections Commission’s decisions and the dismissal of Egyptian Prime Minister Kamal al-Ganzouri’s cabinet. The demonstrators also believe that former regime officials should be prohibited from running for the presidency.

Some non-Islamist groups who were at the heart of organizing the protests that led to the toppling of former leader Hosni Mubarak's regime, are not joining the current round of demonstrations. They argue that the Brotherhood is trying to usurp control of and the direction of the revolution and of popular protests by calling for demonstrations despite abandoning the street in past months.

The Free Front for Peaceful Change said that the Brotherhood is attempting to "hijack the demonstrations which revolutionaries call for.”
