Car explodes in Haifa in suspected criminal assassination attempt

A bomb tore through a car in Haifa on Wednesday in what police believe was an attempt on the life of the car owner, who was not harmed, though a bystander was lightly hurt.
The blast caused the car to become engulfed in flames, though it was quickly extinguished and no further injuries were caused.
Police said Wednesday they believe the blast is linked to a feud between the car owner and a rival criminal in the city.
The blast follows an explosion on Saturday night that is believed to have targeted the mayor of Kiryat Yam, just north of Haifa.
The explosion Saturday night destroyed Mayor David Even Zur’s car as it was parked outside of his house, but no injuries were caused.
A spokesman for the municipality and Even Zur  himself said they believe that the bomb was a “hate crime” meant to target the mayor for a Facebook post where he condemned recent acts of violence such as the firebombing of a Palestinian home on Thursday night that left an 18-year-old baby killed, an attack widely believed to have been committed by Jewish extremists.
Both explosions are currently being probed by the Coastal District’s special investigation unit.
