Colleges help disabled with accessibility program

Accessible courses for students with and without disabilities are to open in seven higher education institutions across the country as the academic year begins on Sunday.

The program, which was initiated by the JDC-Israel and called the “Friending” program, is to include students in the fields of education, social work and occupational therapy, who would study alongside adults with developmental and mental disabilities, learning disabilities and complex sensory and physical limitation.

The courses, which deal with issues of social entrepreneurship, animal care and communicative therapy among others, aim to enable neutral meetings between future educators and caregivers of people with disabilities and people with disabilities.

According to the JDC-Israel, the initiative will help students change attitudes towards the disabled and empower those with disabilities by exposing them to the academic world.
