E. J'lem man gets 18 mos. for throwing rocks at light rail

A 19-year-old resident of east Jerusalem was sentenced to 18 months in prison for throwing rocks at the light rail on Sunday in the Jerusalem Magistrate Court, in the first court case dealing with violence against the light rail.

The teenager threw rocks at the light rail as it went through the neighborhood of Shuafat on August 8, 2011, about a week before the light rail began carrying passengers. Prosecutors pointed to the fact that the defendant had previously served community service for knife possession and had a history of violent issues and interactions with police.

In the past year, the light rail has been damaged by rocks thrown at it more than half a dozen times.
