Gheit: Palestinian reconciliation postponed for 'several weeks'

Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit announced on Sunday that the signing of a Palestinian reconciliation agreement set for October 25 would be postponed for "several weeks." Gheit wouldn't name the Palestinian faction that requested the postponement. However, The Jerusalem Post reported on Saturday that Hamas not only requested the postponement, but also sent high-ranking officials to Cairo to discuss the issue. Hamas has hardened its position with the rival Fatah movement since Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas suspended a campaign to have Israeli officials prosecuted for alleged war crimes committed during Operation Cast Lead. Gheit made the comments after meeting with US Mideast envoy George Mitchell, who was visiting in Egypt after meeting with Palestinian Authority officials in Ramallah on Friday.
