Hamas: Gaza seeking to end power crisis with Israeli fuel

Hamas has been taking strides to end a power crisis in Gaza by reportedly attempting to buy fuel indirectly from Israel and from the Islamist movement's rival Fatah-ruled Palestinian Authority government in the West Bank, Palestinian news agency Ma'an reported Tuesday.

“Nothing came into existence because the Ramallah government insisted on unreasonable fuel prices,” Ma'an quoted Basim Naim, an advisor to Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh, as saying.

Earlier in November, the coastal enclave's sole power plant shut down due to a lack of fuel.

“We have recently been trying to find solutions through other sides, and Turkey expressed readiness to buy fuel for Gaza from Israel. Qatar is ready as well to cover fuel bought from Israel,” Naim added.

He added that Hamas has asked the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) to act as a middleman between Israel and the terrorist group ruling in Gaza, Ma'an reported.
