Heavy metals, magnets and small objects restricted by Israel's Standards Institute

An Israeli standard for children’s jewelry, with a minimum of cadmium and lead and that minimize the danger of swallowing, has been approved at the request of the Health Ministry.

The Standards Institute of Israel approved the regulations by adopting the US standard for jewelry, named ASTM F2923, aimed at youngsters under the age of 12. The jewelry must not be too small, contain magnets or have a high level of heavy metals.

The ministry said that jewelry for children that has excessive levels of heavy metals is extremely dangerous, as toddlers especially naturally suck on objects and put them in their mouths. The Standards Institute of Israel stepped up its handling of the matter following a number of cases in which children swallowed or inhaled jewelry their parents had bought them and had to be hospitalized.
