IDF defends chief military rabbi following allegations of chauvinism

The IDF Spokesman's Office released a statement on Thursday defending IDF Chief Rabbi Brig. Gen. Avichai Rontzki who was quoted in the press as saying at a recent conference that in his opinion, women should not enlist into the IDF. "Women's service in the military is permanent, appreciated and obligatory by law and the security situation in Israel. It exists since the establishment of the IDF," the statement read. The IDF pointed out that women serve in the Military Rabbinate which recently appointed a female officer to assist in supporting the service of religious women in the military.
