Infant girl from haredi family dies at private Jerusalem daycare

An infant girl from an ultra-Orthodox family in the Shmuel HaNavi neighborhood of Jerusalem died Sunday afternoon shortly after falling unconscious during a nap while being watched by an unidentified private daycare worker, police said.
Isaac Katz, a paramedic from United Hatzalah, said Sunday he was at the scene and unsuccessfully attempted to resuscitate the child, whose parents are members of the Brisk religious sect.
“This is a tragedy – the nurse put the baby to sleep and a few hours later discovered that the toddler was unconscious,” said Katz. “Me and other paramedics tried to save her life by performing CPR, but unfortunately it was unsuccessful and she died.”
A spokesperson for United Hatzalah said the cause of death is undetermined, adding that the girl was to have her first birthday next week.
Police arrived at the scene within minutes and said an investigation into the death has been opened.
