Israel on Monday announced its endorsement of the historic peace agreement signed on Saturday between Turkey and Armenia. A statement issued by the Foreign Ministry said that the agreement "proves once again that open, brave and direct dialogue is the only way to overcome controversies and past fears." The statement indicated Israel's hope that the landmark announcement heralded "a better future" of peace and cooperation in the Middle East. However, the Armenian leaders who signed the normalization agreement faced vocal protests by many in Armenia's capital Yerevan and in the Armenian diaspora, who see the newly-forged agreement as capitulation to the perpetrators of the "Armenian genocide."
