Jerusalem Municipality joins UN’s geriatric WHO program

As a reward for aiding senior citizens in the capital, the Jerusalem Municipality on Tuesday was inducted as a member of the United Nations World Health Organization (WHO), officially joining 200 other cities and communities from 33 different countries.

In a statement, the municipality said the WHO’s Global Network of Age-Friendly Cities and Communities added Jerusalem as a member due to the municipality’s successful launch in 2014 of a master plan actively supporting its tens of thousands of senior citizen residents.

The Global Network of Age-Friendly Cities and Communities was created to address the world’s increasing large aging population by increasing health services to improve quality of life standards and increase life spans. Jerusalem has over 70,000 residents over the age of 65, making it the nation’s largest concentrated elderly population.
