Liberman to Syria: Don't test Israel

The Syrians should not test the IDF by attacking Israel, Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee chairman Avigdor Liberman said at a toast for activists in his Yisrael Beytenu party in Jerusalem Sunday night.

Liberman complained about "100,000 murdered in cold blood in Syria" but he did not criticize US president Barack Obama for neglecting to take immediate action to stop the killings. He was careful to heed Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's request not to respond to Obama's controversial decision to wait to decide whether to attack Syria until the Senate completes a lengthy summer vacation.

"We aren't the reason for what is happening in Syria," Liberman told the massive crowd. "The entire civil war did not start because of Israel or because of our conflict with the Palestinians. We have no interest in becoming part of what is happening there. But I recommend not testing us or dragging us in, because we are ready."

Using a tactic employed frequently in the past by Netanyahu, when Liberman criticized the Obama administration, he used the euphemism "the international community."

"The international community that failed in finding solutions in so many places is trying to compensate at our expense," he said. "We don't need a babysitter. Let us deal with the Palestinians alone."
