Man robs 2 Jerusalem banks, attempts to rob third before eluding police

An unarmed Israeli man successfully robbed two southern Jerusalem banks of thousands of shekels in cash within a two-hour period Wednesday afternoon, before eluding police after a failed third attempted robbery.

According to police, the unidentified suspect targeted postal banks in Givat Shaul between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., using little more than threatening notes passed to cashiers.

“He waited on the cashier’s line and when he was served wrote on a piece of paper ‘This is a robbery, hand over your money,’” said a police spokesman. “This worked during the first two robberies, but during the third the cashier refused to hand over the money and he fled the scene.”

Although police did not provide an exact figure of the amount stolen, the official said the suspect made off with “several thousand shekels,” adding that no one was injured during the robberies.

Police have since initiated an investigation and manhunt, and are building a profile of the suspect based on surveillance footage and witness accounts.

“We believe that the same suspect worked alone to rob the banks and hope to make an arrest shortly,” the spokesperson said.
